Overworking and being ready for new tasks 24/7 might be a good start for a newbie, but it will shape you into a burnt-out pessimist in the long run.&nbsp;The major skill of a designer is to rethink things, and there is no way you can reimagine and rethink anything while depressed. So the key lesson I learned for myself is that it is crucial to thoughtfully add new impressions, events, and people to my weekly routine.&nbsp;&nbsp;This way, I get energized and inspired by new things. It is the shortest and the most natural way to direct one’s knowledge, creativity, and motivation into a productive workflow. Leave some free space for thinking it all over in silence though!

One of the strategies that help me in different projects is following the idea of MVP (minimum viable product) that can be used by early customers or your coworkers. My ideal workflow is to break the project into phases and receive feedback at the end of each step. But I discovered that reality could be more complex than that. There might be several projects going on in the company and sometimes you need to deliver the project even if there are no feedback sessions available. &nbsp;Your well-defined structure of the work can help you be more flexible. It might take a long time and slow you down, but the workflow will be much more sustainable to come back to it at any time without feeling panicked. I set a series of steps for completing the project and shared it to receive feedback. &nbsp;What’s more, when I have to continue even without fixing the previous step, I leave the breadcrumbs having this reminder in my mind and remember that it is always possible to come to some steps before, make changes, and continue the journey!

Long ago, I went into product design, realizing the opportunity of getting immersed in the analysis and the high level of responsibility that comes with that. This apparent "total freedom" was very tempting.&nbsp;&nbsp;After some time, I started noticing that my entire design could now be calculated using mathematical formulas. The team and the product achieved the right KPIs, but within the word "creation," the word "ambition" disappeared – the user's current needs completely defeated the "dream."&nbsp;Jigsaw fell into place when I remembered a lecture by Ludwig Bystronovsky on "super-goal." The essence of this theory is that if you set a difficult but exciting dream goal, the result you reach in the end will be higher than if you'd assessed your real capabilities at the start.&nbsp;&nbsp;I believe that design can be perceived as a sport where you don't necessarily need to win gold medals to be a good athlete, but it is imperative to strive for gold medals, becoming stronger in this endeavor. The Samurai code of ethics states that the path is more important than the goal, and I stand by it.

The most important thing I've learned about the design industry is not to take anything personally. In our field, very often, everyone has an opinion, and a subjective one at that, but the designer has to filter them and keep following the goal of the project.&nbsp;Also, the designer should try to be open to new options and opinions, take pride in their work, and last but not least try to be a kind and compassionate person.

Disconnect your self-esteem from designing. As designers, we often get so hung up on the result and how the product will look, feel and interact that we begin to attach ourselves. For years, I felt such a deep connection to my work that if I had to redo an element or work with others on the project, it almost felt like I was failing.&nbsp;Once I subtracted my ego from the equation and began to look at my work and the work my team does, in a holistic way, my designs not only got better, but I began to thrive in my position.

When working on ambitious, multi-year design strategy projects, it's important to consider the decision-makers' experience who are engaging in your process. In my experience, when people reflect on their careers, they are much more likely to remember how they felt being part of a specific project or team than the nuances of the actual end-deliverables.&nbsp;Never forget that after you give your final presentation, your perfectly formatted slide deck will be cut up and copy-pasted into 100s of other decks and documents; it will take on a life of its own. Three years on, key decision-makers may not even remember your original strategy presentation. Still, they will remember how they felt being a part of that process, whether they felt like they had input, whether they felt represented in the ideas outlined, whether the right trade-offs were discussed, etc.&nbsp;Ultimately it will be those people who carry the strategy forward long after you have finished the project. Their understanding of the vision and their buy-in is critical, maybe more so than any glossy visual mocks or the perfect product narrative.&nbsp;The best strategies are those created with significant input from decision-makers along the way, such that they feel a sense of ownership and buy-in before the final presentation has even begun.&nbsp;

Many designers are too focused on the industry standards, not primarily around design quality but design flow. The consensus is that you need to storyboard and wireframe your design first. While it is important, especially in UI/Web design, to focus on the flow and minimizing user interaction prior to the end goal. It is equally important to find something that works for you.&nbsp;Take the time to focus on what makes you better but different as a designer, whether in marketing, illustration, or web-based applications. Don’t get caught up in how everyone else does it. Focus on what works best for you and what keeps you passionate. Don’t exhaust yourself where you don’t need to, and create your own processes.

In 2020, I learned how important it is to find the balance between work and life. I used to be more on a workaholic side, but being on a lockdown most of the year showed a lot of significant areas outside of work. Still, I have too many ideas related to professional and personal projects. To understand what is most important, I use the Pareto principle. I define my long-term goal and then assess the idea in terms of effort and result. If it fits into that 20% that brings 80% of the outcome, I prioritize it. This approach works perfectly both at work and in other fields of life.

This year I'm learning about how to harness data to make better design decisions. Design school often talks about user research as the ultimate way to evaluate your designs and get feedback from users. Recently, I've been discovering how much power can be found in the data itself. Rather than focusing on a small sample size of research participants, statistics can give you signals about users' behavior at scale. In an ideal scenario, designs are measured both qualitatively and quantitatively.&nbsp;So, the next time you're stuck wondering about which design to pursue, consider running it as an A/B test or experiment. The data signals you get will help you make better decisions.
